Courtesan Ôyodo of the Tsuruya House, by Torii Kiyomitsu II (1787-1868). Woodblock print. Japan, early 19th century. This print is from a book called Six Courtesans from Six Houses. The illustrator Torii Kiyomitsu II links the courtesan Ôyodo of the Tsuruya House in Edo (modern Tokyo) to one of Japan's six best-loved poets, whose image is in the top right-hand frame. In the central roundel, the courtesan is pictured with a brush and scroll in her hand and her gorgeous robes spilling about her. The crane motif on her outer robe is a play on the name of her brothel, which means The House of Cranes.
