Details
A Roman cameo-cut glass vase dating from about 40-30 BC, the Portland vase is named after its acquisition by the Duchess of Portland in 1784. Josiah Wedgwood borrowed the vase to make copies in Jasper, spending four years attempting to match the subtlety of the original. He finally exhibited his perfected ‘First Edition’ copy, represented on this enamel badge, to a select London audience in 1790.
