The eighteenth century was a particularly distinctive period in the history of British design, marked by the rise of the Spitalfields silk industry in London’s East End. Anna Maria Garthwaite, James Leman and Joseph Dandridge are among the names closely associated with this period, thanks to the survival of their exquisite watercolour designs now held in the V&A collection.
This vibrant selection of patterns illustrates their keen interest in natural forms and exceptional skill in depicting them. Informative text accompanies each work and the date pad features previous and next month’s views.
