Designed by John Henry Dearle for Morris & Co., the Celandine pattern, shown here on a contrasting red background, features a variety of flowering plants surrounded with green scrolling foliage. It was originally intended for use as a wallpaper print. The V&A holds an extensive collection of works by Dearle, a skilled draughtsman who oversaw production of some of Morris & Co.’s most attractive woven textiles in his role as chief textile designer. This fat quarter is a high-quality printed cotton fabric manufactured in Japan.
