Young V&A Design Club
Design Club at Young V&A is a project-based after school club, partnering with schools in Tower Hamlets to engage local 11-14 year olds with the museum’s permanent and temporary collections. The club’s first project was a collaboration in which twelve dedicated young design enthusiasts from Oaklands School worked with professional designers, makers, retail professionals and educators to create a retail range inspired by the themes in the temporary exhibition Japan: Myths to Manga.
Immersive workshops allowed students to explore new creative avenues, develop practical skills and express their artistic visions. Influenced by yōkai, the characterful supernatural beings often seen in Japanese folklore, the young designers developed skills in foiling, block printing and suminagashi, a Japanese ink marbling technique. The retail range has been developed from images created in these workshops, creating products that serve as an invitation to inspire your own stories.
