About the artist
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) was born in Albi, in the Midi-Pyrenees region, France. Lautrec began drawing at a young age when he was bed-ridden due to health conditions. In 1882, Lautrec moved to Paris where he studied art in the ateliers of two academic painters Léon Bonnat and Fernand Cormon who also taught Émile Bernard and Vincent van Gogh. Lautrec eventually established himself as the premier poster artist of Paris and was often commissioned to advertise famous performers in his prints. The style and content of Lautrec’s posters were heavily influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e prints.
