This fine bone china mug features Edward Lear's drawings of birds which can be found in the V&A archive. Lear (1812–88) was an English artist and illustrator. He drew 16 of these comic birds during his stay in Northern Italy about 1880, for Charles Geffrard Pirouet, then a small boy staying at the same hotel as the artist.

 

Made in the UK and created exclusively for the V&A.

Edward Lear

Edward Lear was an English artist and illustrator known for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks. One of Lear's admirers was Beatrix Potter who was fascinated by his nonsense rhymes and limericks. Both artists often wrote with a particular child in mind.
