Akbar's triumphant entry into Surat, from the Akbarnama.

Opaque watercolour and gold on paper by Farrokh Beg

Mughal Empire, 1590–95

© Victoria and Albert Museum, London

This illustration depicts the Mughal emperor Akbar (r.1556 –1605) riding on a black horse through Surat in western India after taking the city in 1573.

The illustrator, Farrokh Beg, was an Iranian artist who served both Akbar and his son Jahangir across his long career. A skilled craftsman and calligrapher, he was solely responsible for both the composition and the painted details in this piece, unlike the other paintings in the Akbarnama which are the work of two, or sometimes three artists.

The Great Mughals: Art, Architecture and Opulence

V&A South Kensington celebrates the extraordinary creativity and internationalist culture of the Golden Age of the Mughal Court (c.1560 – 1660) during the reigns of its most famous and influential emperors. This vibrant period saw the diverse traditions of Hindu and Muslim craftspeople in northern India combine with the practise of Iranian masters in the royal workshops, producing a radically new and exquisitely beautiful style of art and design.
