About the artist

Henry George Gawthorne

Henry George Gawthorn was born in Northampton and studied at Regent Street Polytechnic in London. He started his career as an architect but turned to poster design and became one of Britain’s most stylish railway poster artists. He painted a number of posters both for advertising and for the interiors of carriages for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, the Southern Railway and LNER. Auction prices of his beautiful travel posters have often set new world auction records. There is often a self-portrait of Gawthorne in his posters. Look out for a man with pince-nez and a panama hat or sometimes sitting on a deckchair.
