A modern take on the classic military portrait, this work by Omar Victor Diop is part of the Diaspora series from 2014. Looking to shine light on the often forgotten African figures seen in European portraiture from the 15th century onwards, Diop casts himself as Haitian politician Jean-Baptiste Belley, uniting contemporary references with historical costumes and poses.
