The Moon Grotto
Created exclusively for the V&A, 2026
© Lucas the Illustrator
This print has been created by Lukas the Illustrator (aka Lukas Palumbo) in response to the V&A's theatre and performance collections.
One of Lukas' favourite objects in the galleries at South Kensington is Henry Emden's set model of the City of Coral for the 1903 pantomime Humpty Dumpty.
Inspired by this object in the V&A collection, Lukas has created a fantastical scene in ink and watercolour. His protagonists are engaged in a sword fight while dressed in costumes that can be found in the museum's theatre and performance collections. The sea cove in which the scene takes place is formed from the dilapidated columns and entryways of the V&A's galleries. Can you spot the V&A monogram?

Lukas the Illustrator
Lukas the Illustrator creates works that reference antiquity, but which have a meaningful place in the present. He seeks magic in a world that has long forgotten it, bringing his stories to life through dip pen, ink, and watercolour. He is inspired by nature, narratives and the great etchings of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.
