How was it made? Glass engraving

Watch as renowned glass artist Katharine Coleman creates a beautifully engraved glass object using centuries-old technology.

Katharine Coleman is one of only five engravers left in Britain who cuts her glass using a copper wheel lathe, grit and oil. Katharine is fascinated by the optical properties of glass and the sculptural beauty of natural objects such as birds and fish, as well as architecture and Japanese motifs. In this film, she walks us through her intricate, highly-skilled process to create a unique glass object engraved with a gingko leaf design, inspired by a visit to our glass galleries.
