Meet Silo Studio, the design collaboration of Attua Aparicio Torinos and Oscar Lessing. Coming from backgrounds in engineering and design, the core of Silo’s work is to look at industrial processes and materials, bringing them into the studio to develop. By adopting a hands-on approach, which they refer to as ‘Handmade hi-tech’, they aim to discover the possibilities that the production line does not see, developing the expressive potential of industrial materials. A mix of craft and technology. Silo will be joined by Esther Calinawan and Leo Harrison who were part of the Wealdstone Youth Workshop, a collaborative project bringing Silo together with young people in Wealdstone, north-west London, to design and make furniture for the local community. They designed multi-functional legs for stools, chairs and benches that could be used in a new public square. In this talk Silo will introduce their practice and the Wealdstone Youth Workshop project, and Esther and Leo will talk about their experience of co-design and designing for community spaces. The talk will be followed by a Q&A with Johanna Agerman Ross, Curator of Twentieth Century and Contemporary Furniture and Product Design.
