V&A East Presents - Who Invented Grime?

Join The Grime Journalist and special guests for an evening exploring one of Black British music's most enduring questions: Who Invented Grime?

Presented in partnership with The Grime Journalist, Ruff Sqwad Arts Foundation and V&A East as part of Making Sound—V&A East's youth music programme inspired by The Music Is Black—this special event marks the first public listening of Who Invented Grime?, the debut album by The Grime Journalist, ahead of its official release.

Through ten tracks, the album explores themes of identity, loyalty, mental health, authenticity and the changing music industry, while tracing the cultural roots of Grime through the legacy of the Windrush generation and the communities that shaped the genre. The music also celebrates London's people, places and stories, weaving the city's geography and relationships into its sound.

The evening will feature a live conversation with The Grime Journalist and special guests from across grime's past and present, including artists and producers connected to the genre's development, followed by an audience Q&A.
