From Opulent Gold and Red to Delicate Pink and White photo
In the 18th century, a new taste emerged, away from the masculine grandeur and opulence of the Baroque style. Favoured by Madame de Pompadour and later by Queen Marie-Antoinette and Catherine the Great of Russia, pastel colours, soft textiles, delicate ornaments and scrolling curves became known as "The French Style" or disparagingly as "Rococo".
Join our V&A guide to discover how women rejected excessive luxuriance and how they imposed a playful style that became a symbol of freedom.
