Zines are mini, DIY magazines that have been used for decades to share ideas, tell stories, and give individuals and communities a voice. In this workshop, students explore the history of zines and their role in self-expression, identity, and communication. Working collaboratively in teams, students will design and produce a shared zine that reflects their ideas and experiences. The final publication is printed using a RISO printer, a stencil-based duplicator that produces bold colours, layered textures, and unexpected colour effects. Through hands-on making, students experiment with collage, imagery, and text while developing key graphic design skills, including composition, layout, layering, stencilling, and colour mixing. The workshop promotes creativity, teamwork, and confidence in expressing ideas visually and in print.
