Lead by Christiana Payne, Professor of History of Art at Oxford Brookes University, you'll explore works of art ranging from Paul Sandby in the 18th to Paul Nash in the 20th century. Images of trees represent artists’ direct response to the natural world. They are also powerful bearers of meaning, symbolism and mood. Whether oak, ash, beech, black poplar, or cypress, each type was recognised to have its own particular character.
