Course overview

Divided into a range of key subject areas, this course begins by examining some of the key houses of the early modernist period by architects such as Alvar Aalto, Richard Neutra and Gerrit Rietveld. Other sessions are devoted to the new furniture of the 20's and 30's, which made great use of fresh materials such as plywood and tubular steel, as well as glass and ceramics that stepped away from the ornate exoticism of the Art Deco style. You will also explore lighting, graphic design and the increasingly important sector of industrial design, including the new wave of functional consumer products and streamlined cars.
