Members' Sunday Film Club Every Day's a Holiday
Step into Schiaparelli’s surreal world of fashion and Hollywood with Every Day’s a Holiday, followed by a discussion between leading commentators on film and fashion Stella Bruzzi and Pamela Church Gibson.
Discover Elsa Schiaparelli’s playful and theatrical approach to fashion on screen with Every Day’s a Holiday (1937), starring Mae West and featuring costumes designed by Schiaparelli herself. Presented in conjunction with Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art, the film offers a glimpse into the designer’s ability to blur the boundaries between fashion, art and performance. Her collaboration with West also inspired one of her most iconic creations: the torso-shaped Shocking perfume bottle, based on a mannequin modelled on West’s measurements.
Following the screening, film and fashion scholars Stella Bruzzi and Pamela Church Gibson will discuss Schiaparelli’s influence on Hollywood, exploring her use of humour, fantasy and the female form. Stella Bruzzi is Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Professor of Film at UCL Academy, while Pamela Church Gibson is a widely-published authority on film and fashion, as well as founding editor of Film, Fashion & Consumption.
