Despite the undeniable and enduring influence of the international Modernism of the 1920s and 30s, the century was marked by a great plurality of styles: some infused with social meaning, others purely visual in nature, many utilising new production techniques and using materials in unexpected ways. A dynamic tension between functional design and the unashamedly decorative persisted throughout the century. Social history will underpin the examination of seminal objects, physical spaces, and styles, including Arts and Crafts, Art Deco, Modernism, and the enduring influence of Japan.
