The lectures fit together very well, the organisation was excellent. I learned so much! 2018 Short Course Student
As images of individuals, portraits possess a unique fascination; in the words of Albrecht Dürer, ‘a portrait enables a man to live after his death’. Gain insights not only into masterpieces by Van Eyck, Dürer, Leonardo and Holbein, but also into the making and meaning of less familiar portraits from Italy and northern Europe across all media, including sculpted busts, medals, drawings and miniatures. Studying Renaissance portraits in all their diversity, through lectures and gallery talks you will learn to ‘read’ a renaissance portrait through costume, explore how portraits functioned in contexts ranging from marriage to death, dynasty to devotion, and discover how the self portrait emerged in this age of the individual.
