In Celebration of Winifred Atwell
Join us for an evening celebrating the musical talent and cultural legacy of composer and pianist, Winifred Atwell - the history-making musician who left an indelible mark on generations of British pianists, broadcasters and activists.
In 1954 Trinidadian-born, Royal Academy of Music educated Atwell became the first Black music artist to have a Number One single in the UK with her instrumental hit single, Let’s Have Another Party. Winifred’s popularity saw her leading her own television programmes on BBC and ITV, opening a beauty parlour and amassing a performance catalogue that travelled between Classical music and jazz. Winifred’s ‘Other Piano’ on which she played rag time and boogie-woogie, is on display in V&A East museum’s inaugural exhibition, The Music is Black: A British Story. Its owner, Sir Richard Stilgoe, will be in conversation with classical and jazz pianists Dr. Samantha Ege and Beatrice Nicholas about the legacy of this remarkable musician.
