Talking Tapestry

The V&A has recognised the importance of tapestry since it was founded with a collection ranging from medieval and Renaissance works to the latest contemporary pieces. Dovecot in Edinburgh is the UK’s oldest tapestry studio, which has enjoyed global acclaim for artworks created in collaboration with artists from David Hockney and Chris Ofili to Helen Frankenthaler and Alberta Whittle.

Their latest commission, a triptych designed by Christine Borland and woven by Dovecot using traditional techniques and innovative materials, celebrates The Edinburgh Seven, the first women to matriculate at any UK university.

The tapestry will have its world premiere at the V&A on International Women’s Day, Friday 8 March 2024. Join us to celebrate with V&A Interim Director of Collections James Robinson in conversation with Dovecot Master Weaver Naomi Robertson, Artist Christine Borland and University of Edinburgh Registrar, College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, Dr Anne-Marie Coriat as they discuss the medium and message of this stunning tapestry.

Accompanying the talk, indie rock/pop trio BETTY will be returning to the V&A for an evening of empowering, rocking, and melodic music in honour of International Women’s Day.
