Trans Chorus is a space for trans+ people to explore voice, movement and presence collectively. Their practice centres on how bodies can exist beyond normative expectations, using communal singing, gentle movement, rhythm and improvisation as tools for connection and expression.
As part of the
First Breath participatory workshops, Trans Chorus invites trans and gender non-conforming participants to take up space through collective sound. Taking place within the opening of V&A East Museum, the workshop creates a space to gather, to sound together and to move in relation to one another. Through voice and movement, participants will explore embodied pathways for expression, culminating in a group improvisation that will be recorded as part of the day’s evolving archive.
The workshop contributes to the wider activation of the museum through polyvocal presence and shared participation. It is open to all who identify within the spectrum of transgender experience, including those whose gender differs from that assigned at birth, exists beyond binary definitions, or is currently being explored.
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement, and to bring water and any snacks they may need. All activities are designed to be accessible to a wide range of abilities. Staff will be available at the museum entrance to guide participants to the workshop space.
Access
Arts access initiative
We Are SENSORIA will provide on-site support for disabled, neurodivergent and chronically ill participants, including a Sensory Inventory with objects for stimming, rest and sensory regulation.
To support access for chronically ill and immunocompromised participants, attendees are asked to take a negative COVID test prior to the session. Mask wearing is encouraged. Tests and masks will be available on arrival for those who need them. Participants planning to test on-site are asked to arrive 20 minutes before the session begins.
The space will be well ventilated, with an air purifier in use throughout. A range of seating options will be available, including chairs with backs, bean bags, cushions and blankets.
Due to fire safety restrictions, there is a limited number of spaces available for wheelchair users. Participants are encouraged to get in touch in advance if they or someone they support plans to attend in a wheelchair, so the team can accommodate where possible.
If you have any access requirements, please let us know in advance by emailing accessibility@vam.ac.uk
The workshop will be photographed and filmed as part of a broader documentation of First Breath. Participants can opt out of being recorded.
