Artist Justine Kurland is the author of SCUMB Manifesto (MACK books, 2022) - the Society for Cutting Up Men’s Books, an initiative inspired by Valerie Solanas’ iconoclastic feminist tract SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto.
In this workshop, participants will learn about photocollage as a feminist and reparative strategy, using photobooks to create unique and original artworks.
‘For the last several years, I’ve culled my library of canonized white male photographers, men who have taken up to much room psychically and literally, whose work crowd our book shelves, museums, and academies. This workshop is a call to action, inviting others to purge themselves of their man books. Together we will cut and paste as a collective way of dealing with historical inheritance and tradition; not all of which is a gift.’ – Justine Kurland
Materials supplied. Participants are asked to bring a photobook which they would like to dissect. Please note that due to the nature of the content, this workshop is suitable for adults only.
