Through a combination of pre-recorded and live panel discussions, we will discuss significant archaeological finds, ceramic technology and technique, trade across the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the Silk Roads, contacts with Europe, architecture and tilework, collecting history, continuity and change in the 19th century, modernism, contemporary artistic practice, and contemporary craft traditions. The regions discussed will encompass the Islamic West, the Middle East, Central Asia, South and South East Asia, Africa and Europe.

The pre-recorded papers will be accessible to conference attendees from two weeks before the conference and for two weeks afterwards. On 19 July, we will open the conference with a live keynote lecture and from 20 to 23 July, we will hold live panel discussions each midday and afternoon. This conference is organised to coincide with the exhibition Epic Iran (29 May-12 September) and the display Contemporary Ceramic Art from the Middle East (19 May-17 October 2021).
