Lunchtime Lectures: Pop Art and Beyond- A History of Screenprints photo
Screenprinting began as a commercial process in the early 20th century but from the 1930s onwards it was adopted by artists as a means of producing affordable limited-edition prints. It was the rise of Pop and Op Art in the 1960s that brought screenprints to greater public prominence but screenprinting is still widely practiced by innovative artists today. In this talk, Gill Saunders, author of Screenprints: A History, will explain the process and its origins, and introduce some of the finest works in the medium by names such as Andy Warhol, Bridget Riley and Damien Hirst.

Gill Saunders, previously Senior Curator of Prints at the V&A, is now Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the V&A Research Institute. She has written extensively on 20th century and contemporary prints and drawings, and she is the editor of a new series on the history and practice of printmaking, published by the V&A with Thames & Hudson. The next title, Linocuts: A History, will appear later this year.
