Mughal paintings are renowned for their intricacy, luminosity, and naturalism. From the Sixteenth to the Eighteenth century, artists within the imperial House of Books illustrated manuscripts and made paintings for imperial albums.
In this five-day, hands-on practical course, you will be guided by artist Laila Tara H. through the basics of this painting tradition from start to finish. You'll learn the skills needed to make and prepare the wasali paper ready for painting, before hand making your own rich pigments using traditional techniques. Finally, Laila will talk you through composition, giving you the skills and confidence to move on to replicating one of the paintings featured in The Great Mughals exhibition. We will also have the opportunity to hear from V&A Curators about the history of Mughal Painting.

Contemporary artist Laila Tara H's work deconstructs the aesthetic framework of the Indo-Iranian miniature tradition, combining traditional painting methods with radically contemporary compositions and concepts. She has exhibited widely including exhibitions at India Art Fair, Cooke Latham and Purdy Hicks Gallery in London.

Course overview
Day One: Introduction to the Mughal Painting Tradition followed by an introduction to Laila Tara H’s practice and work.
Day Two: Introduction to materials including paper preparation, making and glazing wasli paper. Followed by pigment preparation, mixing and testing pigments.
Day Three: Selecting artworks to replicate, creating outlines and completing under-layers.
Day Four & Five: Rendering and completing artworks.
