Mary Quant has been recognised as one of the most innovative designers of the 20th Century – not only for her irreverent and iconoclastic designs but also for her approach to merchandising, with a direct appeal to young and fashion-conscious consumers. This Weekend Course will examine the context from which she emerged, her contemporaries Foale and Tuffin, Ossie Clark, Bill Gibb, and Zandra Rhodes, and some of her notable successors including Barbara Hulanicki, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Paul Smith. These will highlight the combination of fashion innovation and commercial nous that have characterised British fashion. A visit to the V&A Prints and Drawings Study Room to view selected fashion drawings and photographs is included in the weekend.
Course tickets will be available for priority booking for V&A Members from 9.30am Monday 6 May 2019. General booking will open on 9.30am Monday 13 May 2019, subject to availability.
