Setyawan has built an artistic practice in contemporary ceramic art which addresses the experience of repeating forms, pattern-making and the material qualities of clay.
The artwork centres on two enigmatic forms, one evoking a leaf and the other a flower. The installation comprises over 700 individual pieces hand-modelled in clay, slip-cast in red terracotta, and left unglazed to celebrate the clay’s particular material qualities. This installation invites us to experience the work from different vantage points, as it shifts in appearance, playing with light and shadow.
Artwork commissioned in partnership with The Peninsula Hotels’ ‘Art in Resonance’ programme.
The installation was first presented in Hong Kong. The installation was adapted for the V&A, curated by Louis Copplestone in collaboration with Carrie Chan. Produced by Katya Spiers.
