Explore both traditional and modern methods of producing these remarkable tiles that were highly sought-after between the 13th and 16th centuries. Join us as we revive this ancient art form and learn to make tiles using a combination of techniques.

Under the expert guidance of Phil Root, you'll embark on a creative journey, learning the techniques of medieval encaustic tile making. You'll start by designing your own patterns which will then be applied to the terracotta clay tiles. We'll delve into the concepts of tessellation and repeatability in design, enabling you to create intricate and visually stunning compositions.

Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to explore freehand decisions through sgraffito and stamp exercises, techniques that were commonly used during the medieval period. Throughout the workshop, you'll be encouraged to experiment with your designs and techniques, infusing contemporary symbols into your creations while respecting the legacy of the 13th-century imagery.

By the end of the workshop, you'll have at least four glazed tiles that showcase your creativity and newfound skills.
