Tropical Modernism: The Chandigarh Experiment and Post-Colonial India (Part of Global Design Forum) photo
Chandigarh was the first modernist city to be built from scratch and was intended as a symbol of Nehru’s new India. Prakash, whose father was one of the Indian architects working on the scheme, will discuss the importance and ambiguities of modernism to the post-colonial project.

Speakers:
Dr. Christopher Turner is Keeper of Art, Architecture, Photographer and Design at the V&A and Lead Curator of Tropical Modernism: Architecture and Independence (until 22 September). He is also the author of the exhibition book with the same title.

Dr. Vikramaditya Prakash (B.Arch, MA, PhD) works on modernism, postcoloniality and global history. Recent books include One Continuous Line: Art, Architecture and Urbanism of Aditya Prakash and Le Corbusier’s Chandigarh Revisited: Preservation as Future Modernism. An ACSA Distinguished Professor, Vikram teaches at University of Washington, Seattle, is host of the ArchitectureTalk podcast, and co-design lead of O(U)R: Office of (Un)certainty Research.
