Hands-On with Urushi: Lacquer in Japan’s Tea Culture
From tea caddies to water jars, this workshop, led by Grand Tea Master Sōshin Kimura of the Hōshinkai Tea School in Kyoto, offers a rare opportunity to learn about and handle a selection of historical and contemporary lacquered tea ware from Master K
In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore selected lacquer works, followed by a demonstration of the traditional tea ceremony, with matcha and Japanese sweets provided. Organised for London Craft Week, this event is linked to Urushi Now: Contemporary Japanese Lacquer, a display showcasing 21st-century lacquer art in the V&A’s Toshiba Gallery of Japanese Art, opening on 30 April 2026.
