Art academies have been a major driving force behind the development of China's studio craft scene. In 2000, glass art programmes were established in art academies in Beijing and Shanghai with support from the University of Wolverhampton in the UK. These initiatives marked the beginning of China's studio glass movement, which has since grown through academic workshops, teaching programmes, exhibitions, and international exchanges. This lecture explores how British glass education helped shape this emerging field, and examines how Chinese artists adapted and transformed imported pedagogical and technical approaches within local material traditions and into studio practices and contemporary artistic expression.
