Members' Tour: Cabinets of Curiosity photo
Inspired by the German traditions of Kunstkammer, rooms devoted to art, and Wunderkammer, “Rooms of Wonder”, this tour explores the origins of collecting, curiosity, and display. From the Renaissance through the 18th century, the private studies of noblemen, merchants, and scholars evolved into extraordinary spaces filled with rare and remarkable objects.

As global exploration expanded horizons, so too did these collections. Works of art, books, manuscripts, scientific instruments, natural specimens, and precious gems were brought together in richly layered displays that blurred the boundaries between art and science, nature and craftsmanship.

These “cabinets of curiosity” became immersive, encyclopaedic environments and can be seen as early precursors to today’s museums, where the strange, the beautiful, and the ingenious could be admired side by side.

Tour end times are approximate and may vary to what is shown. Please note this tour includes walking and stairs. Please contact the Membership Events team directly with any questions about accessibility. Optional light refreshments will be served after the tour in the Members' Restaurant.
