The coffee house has been central to Turkish culture ever since its introduction to the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. The rich communal traditions and unique preparation and brewing techniques of the kahvehane, or coffee house, were recognised for their cultural significance by UNESCO in 2013.
Building on the legacy of his grandfather, who opened a confectionery shop in Istanbul in 1807 that was later destroyed by fire, Cafer Erol set up his own shop in the same district in 1935. Now run by Cafer’s son and grandchildren, the company continues to produce vibrant sweets, decadent chocolates and dozens of flavours of Turkish delight alongside traditional coffee, tea and fragrances.
