Details

Two figures take a moment to pause at an exceptionally ornate water fountain in this fascinating photograph. A tantalising glimpse of times gone by, the photograph was taken in Istanbul in 1853 and can be seen on display in the Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires exhibition.

The crisp detail of the opulent decoration of the Sultan Ahmed III fountain demonstrates the skill of the photographers. After a decade working as an engraver for Sultan Abdulmecid at the Imperial Mint, James Robertson turned to photography in the 1850s. Together with his brothers-in-law, Antonio and Felice Beato, he travelled from Athens to Egypt, Jerusalem to India, producing captivating albumen prints of far-flung locales.

Printed in the UK and supplied with a cream coloured mount chosen to complement the artwork, this compact collectable print is a perfect way to add architectural interest to a smaller space. Giclée printing captures fine detail and provides archival longevity, while the quality heavyweight paper holds rich, deep colours and gives a luxury, gallery-grade finish.
