The fascinating façade of the Hagia Sophia, replete with towering spires and arcing domes, is captured in this enchanting print. The more modest wooden buildings in the foreground create a sense of the scale and splendour of the mosque as part of the city’s skyline. Published as a hand-coloured lithograph in 1852, the work by Gaspare Fossati can be seen on display in the Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires exhibition.
Gaspare Fossati and his brother Giuseppe were commissioned in 1847-9 by Sultan Abdul Mecit I to carry out restoration work on the domes and mosaics of the Hagia Sophia. Fossati collaborated with German artist Alexius Geyer to create a series of studies of the building, later published as hand-coloured lithographs in London.
Printed in the UK and supplied with a cream coloured mount chosen to complement the artwork, this compact print is easy to find a home for: add visual interest to a small space or hang as part of a gallery wall. Giclée printing captures fine detail and provides archival longevity, while the quality heavyweight paper holds rich, deep colours and gives a luxury, gallery-grade finish.
