A fir tree lit with candles, brimming with colourful decorations and topped with a golden star, evokes the wonder and warmth of a Victorian Christmas. Adapted from an English Christmas card design dating from the 19th century and held in the V&A archive, the Christmas tree features an illuminated portal revealing a festive dancing scene, with figures in classic Victorian dress enjoying a party.
The Victorian period saw the introduction of many customs and symbols now synonymous with the festive period, including the exchanging of Christmas cards; the very first Christmas card was designed for and sent by Henry Cole, the founding director of the V&A.
Each pack contains 8 cards and envelopes, with the message Seasons Greetings printed inside.
