A hint of woodland whimsy for your tree, this charming toadstool is straight from a Christmas fairytale. Made from felt with a classic red and white spotted top, the mushroom is ready to hang from the branch of a Christmas tree, tuck into a wreath, or take home a whole troop and array along your mantelpiece.
Mushrooms and toadstools were a popular motif in Victorian fairy stories, providing shelter for tiny pixies and forming the centrepiece of fairy dances in popular illustrations of the period. Arthur Rackham entrenched the association, depicting fairies sitting on fungi for J. M Barrie’s Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, and Alice first meeting the caterpillar sitting on a mushroom in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; the latter illustration is held in the V&A archives.
