The custom of trimming a Christmas tree was introduced to the UK by Prince Albert and rose to prominence after an engraving was published in 1948 in the Illustrated London News showing Queen Victoria, her husband and children celebrating around a decorated tree. Early trees were adorned with fruit, nuts and gingerbread biscuits and lit with candles; glass decorations became popular among wealthy families later in the century, hand-blown and imported from Germany.
