Add a nautical note to your Christmas décor this year with this enchanting decoration in the shape of a scallop shell – a wonderful gift for a seafood enthusiast, or an art lover, as a nod to the shell as an enduring motif in Surrealism. Exquisitely made by Fair Trade artisans, the shell has a plush velvet surface adorned with gleaming golden threads and fine beads.
The decoration is made using the traditional method of zardozi embroidery, zar meaning gold and dozi meaning sewing; the ornate craft of hand embroidery with metallic threads originated in Persia, reaching India in the 12th century, and is still practised across the subcontinent.
St. Nicolas is a small London-based brand dedicated to designing original, interesting and meaningful keepsakes. The company has worked with a family-run business in Northern India since 1999, creating Fair Trade decorations using the ancient zardozi embroidery technique.
