Serene in its golden splendour, this beautiful swan decoration has been created exclusively for the V&A. Golden threads and fine beads have been applied by hand to the plush velvet swan, with a bright red beak and a gold-rimmed eye; the V&A logo is embroidered on the reverse.
The decoration is made using the traditional method of zardozi embroidery, zar meaning gold and dozi meaning sewing; the ornate craft of hand embroidery with metallic threads originated in Persia, reaching India in the 12th century, and is still practised across the subcontinent.
St. Nicolas is a small London-based brand dedicated to designing original, interesting and meaningful keepsakes. The company has worked with a family-run business in Northern India since 1999, creating Fair Trade decorations using the ancient zardozi embroidery technique.
