Step back in time to the origins of rave culture with this one-of-a-kind vase by Clink Street Ceramics. Exclusive to the V&A Shop, the vase takes its name from a colourful rave card bearing the name Nasooka, a play on the branding of an American bubble gum company, just one of the visual cues referenced on this richly decorated piece.
The Rave Culture Theory series of stoneware vases explores the origins of rave culture in the UK and the USA in the early 1990s, including the legendary Acid House raves held in a nightclub on Clink Street in 1988. Discarded flyers, images and memories discovered through archival research have been applied to the pieces as transfer decoration, examining the visual language of early rave culture.
Thrown on a traditional potter's wheel in the Clink Street studio, the vase is fired three times and decorated by hand to create a playful, textured piece with huge decorative appeal.
There may be anomalies in the ceramic due to its handmade nature. The vase is for decorative use only and designed to function as a standalone art object.

Clink Street Ceramics
Found on London’s South Bank, the studio was founded in 2014 by potter James Sims with the aim of reconnecting craft with the urban environment. His traditionally hand-thrown pieces balance simplicity of shape with explorations in texture, using popular imagery and drawings as surface transfers that become permanently embedded beneath the glaze. Each individual piece has its own combination of collected media, and the labour-intensive process means each one takes six to eight weeks to produce.
