Brimming with convivial colour, this delightful print depicts men gathered at the coffee house, drinking, talking and playing board games, sporting vibrant clothing and pure white turbans. Introduced to the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, the kahvehane, or coffee house, endures as a venue for the exchange of ideas, scientific concepts and philosophical debates.
This artwork dates from about 1620 and is taken from an Ottoman folio. From the 16th century onwards, albums such as these were a popular way to store and display diverse collections of artwork. This folio was compiled in Istanbul, probably for a private citizen. The ink and coloured pigment work is accompanied by exquisite Persian calligraphy, mounted on marbled paper.
Printed in the UK and supplied with a dark red mount chosen to complement the artwork, this compact print would make a wonderful gift for a cultured friend, or a colourful addition to your own home. Giclée printing captures fine detail and provides archival longevity, while the quality heavyweight paper holds rich, deep colours and gives a luxury, gallery-grade finish.
