Details

Interweaving tile designs in contrasting tones of blue and red come together to create this beguiling print. Reproduced from an original watercolour, the artwork layers Byzantine and Ottoman ornamental systems, exploring the effect as patterns are disrupted through acts of removal, interruption, and accumulation.

Turkish printmaker Simge Güçlü has created this exclusive work in response to the Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires exhibition. Inspired by architectural motifs and inherited visual languages, the piece investigates the relationship between memory and loss, revealing how the cultural identity of Istanbul has been continually reshaped throughout its history.

Printed in the UK and exclusive to the V&A Shop, this ornate piece is an ideal choice to bring colour and texture to your space. Giclée printing captures fine detail and provides archival longevity, while the quality heavyweight paper holds rich, deep colours and gives a luxury, gallery-grade finish.

About the artist

Simge Güçlü

Turkish artist, researcher, and printmaker Simge Güçlü trained at Cornell University in New York and the Royal College of Art in London. Working across print, paper, installation and artist books, Güclü explores how repetition, fragmentation, and trace operate as carriers of personal and collective histories. She treats print as a physical record of the actions and decisions involved in making, with its layers, textures, and marks preserving the process. Güclü has collaborated with the V&A to create an exclusive commissioned artwork inspired by the Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires exhibition.
