The mighty columns and ornate arches of the interior of the monumental Hagia Sophia are captured in this impeccable print. A jewel in the architectural crown of Istanbul, the Hagia Sophia’s distinctive silhouette has towered over the city for nearly 1,500 years. The watercolour and pencil work was created by Richard Phené Spiers in 1866, and can be seen on display in the Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires exhibition.
English architect and author Richard Phéne Spiers was born in 1838 and trained in London and Paris. He travelled widely, creating watercolour sketches and architectural records of buildings across Europe and the Middle East. He was a recipient of the Royal Academy Travelling Studentship, enabling him to visit Istanbul in 1866 and immerse himself in the opulent world of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture.
Printed in the UK, this elegant artwork would make a perfect gift or a tasteful addition to your own home. Giclée printing captures fine detail and provides archival longevity, while the quality heavyweight paper holds rich, deep colours and gives a luxury, gallery-grade finish.
