Details

Wealthy Turkish women enjoy an outing in the araba, or carriage, in this colourful watercolour. The ornate carriage, drawn by splendidly outfitted oxen, befits the societal position of the passengers. A popular pastime for women of the high classes, who spent much of their time cloistered in the seclusion of their homes, a trip in the araba would often conclude in a visit to friends or a picnic at a riverside meadow around the city.

The original work was created in Istanbul in about 1843 by Maltese painter Amedeo, Count Preziosi. After training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he departed for the Near East, producing artworks capturing the costumes, customs and landscapes of Istanbul to be sold as souvenirs to tourists and visitors. The most popular were reproduced as lithographs in Paris, offering an insight into the city to those unable to travel.

Printed in the UK and supplied with a rust orange mount chosen to complement the artwork, this compact print would make a fantastic gift for a friend, or a covetable addition to your home. Giclée printing captures fine detail and provides archival longevity, while the quality heavyweight paper holds rich, deep colours and gives a luxury, gallery-grade finish.
