Step back in time to 18th-century Turkey with this beautiful jigsaw. The 1000-piece puzzle features an image on display at the V&A exhibition Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires; the exquisite watercolour depicts wealthy Turkish women taking an outing in an araba, or carriage, drawn by splendidly decorated oxen. Sure to offer hours of contemplation and satisfaction, the puzzle is the perfect companion for a relaxing afternoon.
The watercolour painting was created in Istanbul in around 1843 by Amedeo, Count Preziosi, a Maltese painter born in 1816. After training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he departed for the Near East in around 1842. His artworks capturing the costumes, customs and landscapes of Istanbul were sold as souvenirs to tourists and visitors; the most popular were reproduced as lithographs in Paris, offering an insight into the city to those unable to travel.
