Daylight streams through clerestory windows, illuminating the exquisitely decorated vaulted ceilings, while colourfully dressed visitors congregate in the vast entrance hall. The original lithograph print by Gaspare Fossati was published in 1852 and can be seen on display in the Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires exhibition.
Gaspare Fossati and his brother Giuseppe were commissioned in 1847-9 by Sultan Abdul Mecit I to carry out restoration work on the domes and mosaics of the Hagia Sophia. Fossati collaborated with German artist Alexius Geyer to create a series of studies of the building, later published as hand-coloured lithographs in London.
Printed in the UK, this compact artwork is a perfect choice for a smaller space, or to add to a gallery wall. Giclée printing captures fine detail and provides archival longevity, while the quality heavyweight paper holds rich, deep colours and gives a luxury, gallery-grade finish.
